The Ohio Department of Transportation will close the East Erie Street (U.S. Route 20) bridge in Painesville Township for construction on May 30, with an agency spokesperson noting that the closure is set to last for around four months.

The Canton-based Beaver Excavating Company was awarded a $2.3 million contract for a bridge deck replacement, explained ODOT Public Information Officer Brent Kovacs. During the approximately 120-day closure, the company will replace the bridge’s concrete driving surface while leaving its overall structure intact.

The bridge spans the Grand River and connects the township with the city of Painesville. ODOT’s recommended detour is that motorists driving eastbound take state Route 283 west to state Route 2 east to state Route 535 east, with the reverse true for drivers heading west.

Kovacs asked drivers to follow the detour and give themselves extra time on May 30.

As was reported in August, the bridge is considered to be in “poor condition.”

“It doesn’t mean the bridge is unsafe or anything like that,” Kovacs said. “It just means that one area of the bridge needs to be fixed.”

A city news release noted that people with questions or concerns can contact the ODOT District 12 Public Information Office at 216-584-2005.
