The Ohio Department of Transportation is moving forward with a proposed replacement of the bridge deck surface of U.S. Route 20 — East Erie Street — over the Grand River in Painesville Township.

Described as being in “poor condition,” the transportation improvement, currently in design, is estimated to cost $2.4 million, officials noted.

Additionally, the project is estimated to be sold to a contractor in January, with work slated to begin in the spring of 2023, said ODOT Public Information Officer Brent Kovacs.

“Currently, the plan is to close Route 20 over the Grand River for this work for 60 days, tentatively,” he added. “The detour will be state Route 283 to state Route 2 to state Route 535 (and back) to Route 20.”

Further details regarding preservation project scheduling will be released early next year.

The environmental review, consultation, and other actions required by applicable federal environmental law for the project are being, or have been, carried out by ODOT pursuant to 23 U.S. Code 327 and a memorandum of understanding dated Dec. 14, 2020, and executed by the Federal Highway Administration and ODOT.
